Online Photo Printing sites in India September 20, 2006

Here are some sites in India that operate the snapfish business model.

http://www.merasnap.com/
http://www.sendphotos2india.com/
http://www.eyaadein.com/

Most of the time its cheaper to use one of these services to send photos to India for NRI’s than to send via postal mail  to their friends and family backhome.
Snapfish (http://www.snapfish.com/) is one of the pioneers in this area and one of the first site to operate this model in the US.It has since been  aquired by HP . There are tons of sites in US which copied this model and it eventually spread to India. The main problem with this model is that the barriers to entry for other internet sites to offer these services are very low.

Eventually everyone who own a decent sized photo printing firm will be able to offer these services on the web, when there are critical mass of customers around.

I have been following the blogging phenomenon since some time early 2005. I used to read several blogs but never thought of starting my own. Once I started my MBA I realised I had to submit lot of reports and in some of them I had to fill in pages of reports(some times with just fluff) and  Initially I had a very tough time doing that,  Its not like I can write or anything like that, but sometimes when the paper or report submitted had to be be of certain number of pages, especially in Teams class where our team had to submit a three page report every week about what we learned in the class, team observations and the dynamics in our team.  It was not my cup of tea.

I wanted to write something everyday to improve my written skills, to be able to fill pages if and when I need arose. What better way then write about your thoughts on the daily happenings. So there you go  thats the reason for my blog.

The World is Flat – Tom Friedman September 13, 2006

Since I dont get time to read books (other than my required MBA readings) I tried to get audio and video versions of really good books and documentaries.

Wanted to read the abovebook for a long time, I finally got hold of an audio version from public library, So far I am at the 4th chapter and really like it. Friedman discusses all things that are already working to make the world really flat in the 21st century. Part of it deals with how India  got into this whole outsourcing business, since I have been following articles since early 2000 I can totally relate to what he says about how this thing took off.

One of the other interesting things that I got to watch recently was the PBS documentary  Commanding Heights. I would highly recomend it to someone who wants to learn about global economics.

Downloaded this really cool freeware from Logmein.com. It offers functionality very similar to PCAnywhere and remote desktop, but over the web.

Now I will be able to access my home computer from virtually anywhere without paying a dime for software.

Finally took Vihaan to cincinnati zoo this sunday. He had a lot of fun, after we came back when I asked him about the trip, he repeated all names  almost all the animals he saw, I think he will remember it for a long time.

Next week I will take him to the museum center  . Heard a ton of positive reviews about the chidrens area there. If he likes it I might take yearly membership

Copying Copyrighted DVDs,VHS on a DVD recorder September 8, 2006

DVD Burners and recorders prevent copying of DVD’s and VHS tapes that have Macrovision Protection. But some devices are available which will let you circumvent that. This is a way to convert those old VHS you love but the DVD’s are not int he market yet.

You will have to get another VCR or DVD and connect a video stabilizer like  GOVideo between the 2 units to bypass macrovision.

Hooked up the  DVD recorder VCR combo. I wanted to record something onto a DVD, The first tape I wanted to copy over to a DVD for Vihaan was copy protected. Coudnt get to record it no matter how I tried to circumvent it.I will try to record it by connecting the output of another VCR today and see how it goes.

In desparation to record something I tried to connect the camcorder output to see if I could record that. I coudnt find the IEEE I.394 cable so had to abandon that.

I got an ‘A’ in the Managerial Economics Exams. Though the paper was unbelievably tough, I  guess I did relatively well compared to others in the final exam.

This was the best course so far into the program. Learnt some really cool concepts and gained a lot of insights into the insurance industry, Pricing of goods, information economics,   I really like how Prof Slezak really tied every concept he explained with a practical examples.
